Google is now advising webmasters to focus on creating high-quality sites rather than building links. So link building is dead or dying now, right? Wrong! Link building is getting harder, but it’s still alive and kicking, and here’s …
Yes, silly pants. But it’s far more nuanced than the above article from SearchEngineWatch.com indicates. To be more clear, this is a great article, and we agree with nearly everything that is stated. However, dear readers, one thing that the authors do not bring to light is the fact that, in short, links matter more or less depending on whether or not the website’s targeted search terms are national or local in nature.
Let’s cut right to an example…if you own and operate a office cleaning business in Boise, Idaho, let’s say, and an SEO provider tells you what you need is a load of high quality backlinks, well, run the other way. This is completely false! The fact is, you need only a small number of backlinks with a geo-targeted, local SEO industry like this, in order to please Google. And those links can easily be had by doing things like signing up and filling in your business listings on Google, Yahoo Local, and Bing. Perhaps your a member of your local chamber of commerce? Boom, great high PR link for you that came with your membership. Have a slideshow maybe on Slideshare? Boom, great link for you. Maybe you did a press release last month, great, that’s lots of good links for you. But honestly, if you are in a local business like this you should NOT be stressing about link building, flat out. You should be focused on doing the natural things to increase your exposure online, and all the links you’d need with happen naturally — if your on-site SEO factors are in order, that is. But that’s for another post…
We felt the need to bring this up, because, quite frankly, this article talks about the misconception that links are losing importance as a ranking factor. And we’d agree, that is a misconception. They are still important, and not going anywhere anytime soon. But it MUST be noted that the amount of links you need, and amount of your time and energy you need to focus on building those links into a juicy link profile, well, that varies greatly depending on whether we are talking Local SEO, or National/Global SEO. Big difference. Don’t let them tell you otherwise!!!
